Information
has glosseng: The Yorkshire captaincy crisis of 1927 was a disagreement among members of Yorkshire County Cricket Club over who should succeed Major Arthur Lupton as captain of the team. At this point, all appointed captains of county cricket teams were amateurs. At Yorkshire, a succession of amateur captains had been chosen who were not worth their place in the side as players but were mainly chosen and judged on their ability to maintain discipline. Each captain had only lasted for a short time and Yorkshire therefore wanted to appoint a more accomplished cricketer as captain, and approached the professional Herbert Sutcliffe to take over the captaincy. As a professional, this would have been a departure from standard practice at the time. After he initially accepted, there was a large amount of controversy among the members over the appointment.
