Bevor bildgebende Verfahren der Sonographie, der Magnetresonanztomographie und der Computertomographie zur Verfügung standen, war die Arthrographie die einzige Möglichkeit, Weichteilstrukturen der Gelenke mittels einer Röntgenuntersuchung darzustellen.
