Er wurde zuerst im Jahr 1904 von Ludwig Aschoff und ein Jahr später von Paul Rudolf Geipel beschrieben. In der deutschen Literatur werden sie daher als Aschoff-Geipel-Knötchen beschrieben, im russischen Sprachraum heißen sie synonym Aschoff-Talajew-Knoten .
