This commandment establishes the exclusive nature of the relationship between Israel and Yahweh, a covenant initiated by Yahweh after delivering the Israelites from slavery through the plagues of Egypt and the Exodus. It was not enough that Yahweh be worshiped along with other deities, nor even to be preeminent among lesser deities.
