Κάθε αυλός παράγει μια μόνο νότα ενός συγκεκριμένου ηχοχρώματος. Οι αυλοί ομαδοποιούνται κατά ηχόχρωμα και τονικό ύψος σε σειρές αυλών ονομαζόμενες "ρέγκιστρα" ή "συστοιχίες". Ηλεκτρικοί διακόπτες ή μηχανικοί μοχλοί (ανάλογα με τον τρόπο κατασκευής του οργάνου), συνήθως τοποθετημένοι δεξιά και αριστερά ή/και πάνω από τα κλαβιέ, χρησιμεύουν για να ενεργοποιούν και να σταματούν την παροχή αέρα στις διάφορες συστοιχίες και επομένως να προσθέτουν ή αφαιρούν ηχοχρώματα ανάλογα με το επιθυμητό ηχητικό αποτέλεσμα (σε κάθε ρέγκιστρο αντιστοιχεί και ένας διακόπτης). |
